If you are using Mac OS X you might have noticed that, Terminal can become noticeably slow on launch. Terminal application should be fast enough, since it does not have any complex UI or plugins to be loaded. Unfortunately, it became so slow that it takes atleast 10 seconds after it’s launch, before you can interact with it. To see what’s going on, I went through all the preferences and could not find anything in relevance to this. My first guess, was that it’s loading something in the startup due to which it has become slow.

Clean my Mac X is a well know software that has been in the industry for quiet time and one of the most used applications for Mac Users. It’s a great software for cleaning and speeds up macOS dramatically. According to MacPaw which is the software owner says CleanMyMac X chases junk in all corners of your macOS. It cleans unneeded files, like. However, you may find that everything is faster except the boot from reset, with the initial Apple logo not appearing for about 30 seconds. The fix is to go into System Preferences » Startup Disk. If your Mac runs slowly If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check. Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space.

After I could not find anything in the preferences, I decided to clear the log files. ASL (Apple System Logs) files contains the information about your applications and their activity logs. After i removed the .asl files, the launch time of Terminal dipped. Though it’s a temporary solution, but it’s like cleaning your backyard ever now & then.

So let’s see how you can remove the .asl files and improve the speed of Terminal in Mac OS X. Please note, that it’s my own finding to clear logs so that the Terminal launches faster. It worked for me quite nicely, I am not sure if it will work for you or break something, so please run the following commands at your own risk.

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Change directory by typing :
  3. List the .asl files by typing.
  4. Now we are going to delete all .asl files from the log folder.
  5. Quit Terminal and Launch Terminal.
  6. I am sure you will notice the speedy launch this time, if you have performed the above steps correctly. Now enjoy playing around with the stupid, powerful black window !

Unlike the human brain that constantly deletes old and unnecessary data or files by itself, the Mac never automatically removes its data. The flaw of this design is that over time the limited space hard drive becomes congested and even filled up if nothing is ever deleted, hence frequent decongestion is advised.

Decongestion can be achieved via two methods, either manually or automatically. Manually, a user can go through the rigorous process of searching for and identifying all redundant files and documents on his device and delete them manually. Once this option is toggled on, it enforces Mac to automatically organize documents and clean unused, hidden or unread items, which can also transfer them to the iCloud, freeing up valuable space on your drive.

4. Decongest Your Mac Memory and CPU Space

A major reason for your slow Mac after its High Sierra update is that numerous applications are running simultaneously to consume vital CPU space so that the system slows down. When some applications run actively, others run in the background and also consume considerable space. To recover memory space and resolve this issue, we need to deploy the Activity Monitor.

Access Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor

Should you identify an application that is not necessary but is consuming considerable memory space, be swift to eliminate it by tapping it and hitting the close button at the top-left corner of the screen. Unwanted apps can also be toggled off to save Memory.

5. Reconfigure SMC & PRAM/NVRAM

The System Management Controller (SMC) and parameter RAM (PRAM) are important tools in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Mac. Reconfiguring the SMC resolves all hardware management issues like fans or battery faults and so on. While reconfiguring the NVRAM handles issues like pertaining to booting, screen resolutions and battery charge, etc.
