Obtaining TeXShop
TeX Distributions. If you’re new to TeX and LaTeX or just want an easy installation, get a full TeX distribution. The TeX Users Group (TUG) has a list of notable distributions that are entirely, or least primarily, free software. TeXShop (TeXShop), if you want something lightweight and functional. This was one of the first decent TeX editors for the Mac, and was one of the driving forces behind the 'resurgence of TeX usage on the Mac platform'. I've used both TeXShop and TeXworks, and they're very similar in. If your Mac is using an earlier version of any Mac operating system, you should install the latest Apple software updates, which can include important security updates and updates for the apps that are installed by macOS, such as Safari, Books, Messages, Mail, Music, Calendar, and Photos.
The current Mac operating system is macOS, originally named 'Mac OS X' until 2012 and then 'OS X' until 2016. Developed between 1997 and 2001 after Apple's purchase of NeXT, Mac OS X brought an entirely new architecture based on NeXTSTEP, a Unix system, that eliminated many of the technical challenges that the classic Mac OS faced.
If you just want to upgrade to the latest TeXShop, get
- Latest TeXShop, Version 4.63 for Intel and Arm on Sierra and higher (47.9 MB)
- Version 4.44 for Yosemite or higher (46.5 MB)
- Source Code for Version 4.63 (requires XCode 12)

TeXShop is just a front end to TeX. You also need a TeX distribution. All new users and everyone elsewho wants to upgrade everything should read the following sections.
Shortcut for New Users Who Want To Test Drive TeX
TeXShop is a front end to TeX and LaTeX, but when TeXShop typesets, it calls command line programs in an underlying TeX distribution. This distribution must be obtained separately. The TeX distribution contains the actual typesetting programs by Knuth and others, various fonts used byTeX, and a vast array of support style files and other auxiliary files.
A small distribution adequate for beginners is available by going to http://www.tug.org/mactex/morepackages.html. Click on the link titled 'BasicTeX.pkg.zip' to download. The result will be an Apple install package which will install BasicTeX whendouble clicked. Obtain TeXShop separately. No further configuration is needed, so run TeXShop and try some simple examples from the internet or the TeXShop Help Menu.
Obtaining TeXShop and TeX Live
The standard TeX distribution on the Macintosh is called TeX Live. BasicTeX is a small subset of TeX Live, but anyone serious about TeX should obtain the full distribution. The MacTeX Working Group from the Tex User Group (TUG) constructed an install package which installs TeX Live and everything else needed to run TeX on Mac OS X in one step. This package is free, and uses Apple's standard installer; installation takes four to eight minutes and is automatic. The package installs TeX Live, the complete reference edition of TeX produced in cooperation by TeX User Groups across the world. It also installs Ghostscript and several GUI utilities for TeX including TeXShop, so it is not necessary to get the front end separately. One of the GUI programs it installs is 'TeX Live Utility,' which can keep TeX Live up to date. Everything is completely configured and ready to use once the installer finishes its job.

TeX Live runs on almost all modern operating systems, including Mac OS X, Windows, GNU/Linux, and various forms of BSD Unix. The distribution is the same on all of these systems; nothing has been added, subtracted, or modified to make it work on OS X. The distribution contains essentially every TeX tool in common use today: Plain TeX, LaTeX, AMS-TeX, ConTeXt, XeTeX, and others, as well as a complete array of packages, style files, and fonts.
Another way to get MacTeX is to join TUG; the package is on the DVD sent immediately to new members and once a year to continuing members.This DVD contains extra front-ends for Mac OS X and many other useful TeX utilities. It alsocontains complete TeX distributions for Windows, GNU/Linux, and other Unix systems.

What Is This?

TeX Live Utility is a Mac OS X graphical interface for TeX Live Manager, which is a tool provided with TeX Live 2008 and later, for updating, installing, and otherwise managing TeX Live. TeX Live Utility aims to provide a native Mac OS X interface for the most commonly used functions of the TeX Live Manager command-line tool.
Use the “Latest Version” link in the sidebar to download a compiled binary (either a .dmg or .tar.gz file, depending on the version). If you are using Mac OS X Catalina or later, you will need to control-click (or right-click) on the TeX Live Utility icon in Finder and choose “Open” from the contextual menu, due to Apple’s Gatekeeper. Functionality
The present subset of commands is as follows:
- Set paper size for all TeX programs
- Update packages (all or subset)
- Install and remove packages (all or subset)
- Show details for individual packages (including texdoc results)
- Set a mirror URL for command-line tlmgr usage
- List and restore backups

Why Use This?
Why use this program when you can use the command line tlmgr or its built-in Perl/Tk GUI? TeX Live Utility performs TeX Live infrastructure updates using the Disaster Recovery script, which avoids problems with tlmgr removing itself while updating. TeX Live Utility also provides a native OS X user interface, and does not require installation of Perl/Tk (which can be complicated).

Versioning Notes
TeX Live Utility 0.74 and earlier will work with TeX Live 2008 and 2009. Current versions of TeX Live Utility require TeX Live 2009 or later, due to changes in the tlmgr tool itself.
The last version to support Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8 was TeX Live Utility 1.41. Support for those was dropped two weeks after 1.41 was released, due to another Xcode version jump. Since 10.7 and 10.8 kind of sucked, this was no great loss.
If you are stuck using Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8, you can use TeX Live Utility 1.36 or earlier. Apple’s compiler removed support for 10.6.8, which is a shame since it was the last good version of OS X.
If you are stuck using Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 (e.g, you are using a PowerPC system), you can use TeX Live Utility 1.03 or earlier. Unfortunately, Apple made it too hard to keep supporting 10.5.
